There are multiple reasons why the dentists at Oral Surgery Associates may recommend gum contouring. The straightforward procedure removes excess gum tissue and, while often used as a cosmetic treatment, is most often suggested at our practice as a pre-prosthetic surgery.
Oral Surgery Associates is the only oral surgery practice in the area that has been open for more than 20 years. We proudly serve the patients of Monroe, LA, and the surrounding areas.
Who Can Benefit from Gum Contouring?
Some of our Monroe, LA, patients may require oral surgery procedures before a partial or complete denture is placed. Because dentures sit directly on top of the bony ridge of the jaw, the tissue below often must be a particular shape and size to be comfortable. Gum contouring is one of several procedures that can allow your prosthetic to fit as comfortably and stably as possible. Other pre-prosthetic procedures include:
Gum contouring can also be performed for cosmetic reasons. If you are dissatisfied with your “gummy smile” or an uneven gum line, one of our doctors can customize a treatment plan to address those aesthetic issues.
Am I a Candidate?
Most patients who are seeking comfortable prosthetics at our Monroe dental practice are great candidates for gum contouring. As with any oral surgery, one of our doctors will examine your teeth and gums to ensure that you are in good oral health before scheduling your procedure. Any signs of gum disease will need to be treated ahead of time to ensure that you do not experience complications after surgery.
Gum contouring can not only create a more symmetrical smile, but also help your dentures fit securely and snuggly.
Candidates for gum contouring are often seeking a restorative treatment for missing teeth. Gum contouring allows our doctors to ensure that your prosthetic sits snuggly on your gums. Candidates should be willing to maintain good oral health to ensure that they do not suffer from further gum tissue recession after surgery.
How Is Gum Contouring Performed?
Gum contouring is performed using local anesthesia. Additionally, if you are anxious about oral surgery, our doctors are also trained to administer several forms of sedation that can help you relax during your procedure.
Once you are comfortable, your oral surgeon will use a scalpel or laser to remove small amounts of gum tissue. Our doctors always seek conservative treatments when possible. The removal of even a small amount of gum tissue can prevent discomfort for you following the placement of your custom prosthetic.
Following the outpatient procedure, patients will be advised on how to care for their teeth and gums until the gum tissue fully heals. Patients should be very careful and gentle when brushing and flossing during the first week following surgery to prevent excessive bleeding or damage to the gums. It may take a few days or weeks for your gums to fully heal.
